In China, there is a prominent Chinese lantern festival each year where decorative lamps and Chinese hanging lanterns are displayed. The Chinese lantern festival is called Shang Yuan Festival and is held during the last day of the Chinese New Year celebration period. Many of the Chinese paper lanterns that people carry during the festival have designs of dragons or certain Chinese characters. Dragon lamps have become very popular in design, as the dragon is probably the most well-known symbol in Asia. In earlier times, during the Han Dynasty, when the Chinese lantern festival began, only emperors and nobleman carried Chinese paper lanterns. Today, everyone can carry a Chinese lantern, however, some people prefer not to and enjoy the brilliant spectacle created during the day of the Chinese lantern festival. During the festival, one can find many red Chinese lanterns. Red is an auspicious color in Chinese lore and red Chinese lanterns or decorative lamps can be found in most Chinese establishments, such as restaurants and shops.
